(Clay) soils move up and down under the influence of the groundwater level (shrink-well behavior), leading to damage. With peat soils, it works a little differently As peat oxidizes when it becomes dry which causes permanent soil subsidence. With drier summers, this is becoming ever more common. More subsidence results in more damage and higher maintenance costs.

GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION
